Don’t Call It an ‘Ethnic’ Grocery Store

When illustrating a New York Times article on the profound influence of Asian grocery stores, I wanted to move beyond static shelves and capture the living, breathing community within. My focus was on the people: the wide-eyed wonder of a first-time visitor shopping for vegetables, the familiar chatter of aunties catching up, the shared excitement around a sample table. This store is more than a market; it's a gallery of flavors where every shopper is an artist. Their baskets, and ultimately, their home pantries, become curated collections, blending Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Indian staples. This illustration is a tribute to that beautiful, everyday alchemy of culture, curiosity, and connection.
